This tool compresses the rings with the use of your own pliers allowing the cylinder to be slipped on over the piston. Then the slot in the compressor allows it to be removed around the connecting rod and past the studs. On a conventional engine, this tool compresses the rings on the piston allowing it to be slid into the engine block.
